After the stimulus driven growth in 2017, the short-term outlook for the auto industry is uncertain. As growth moderates, competition intensified, new technologies emerge and the regulatory environment changed, how are major companies responding to potential new opportunities and challenges? And how will China’s role in the global industry develop in the coming years?

On June 7th, the 8th Global Automotive Forum opening remarks will be held in Chongqing, which focuses on “Industry Landscape And Strategies In A Maturing Market”. It deals with how big auto companies are adapting their strategies and operations as we transition to new market dynamics.

In recent years, major automotive market demand in China and abroad are close to saturation, then how will the whole industry deal with this situation? And the traditional automotive industry is moving towards electrification and intellectualization. This road of change is filled with a lot of uncertainty. How will we break through the obstacles to achieve this transformation?

Vice Chairman, General Manager of Guangzhou Automobile Group, Feng Yaxing pointed out that, by 2023, the popularity of passenger cars in China will be coming to an end, and smart connectivity car will be the focus of development in the future. He believes that from the perspective of scientific and technological progress, the energy and intelligent network revolution will propel the revolution of the automobile industry. The cars of the future will provide more features. This trend will cause mechanical energy to become mobile energy, we will move from producing cars, to developing smart vehicles. In addition, from the perspective of auto industry development patterns, the Chinese auto industry will continue to lead the global automotive economy, and the potential for continuous growth is still very attractive.

In this regard, Dongfeng Motor Company Deputy General Manager, An Tiecheng also said that technological progress has a profound impact on the development of the automotive industry, which in turn cannot be separated from technological progress. In the new competitive pattern, the automotive industry has been given a new path, and gradually toward the direction of intelligence, electrification, connectivity and sharing. "Technological innovation is an effective way to enhance the autonomy of core competence and is a demand of the development of industry," An Tiecheng pointed out that a common mission of China's auto companies is to speed up technological innovation to enhance their core competence. An Tiecheng frankly expressed in the situation where self-owned-brands accounted for half of China's auto industry, the shortage of independent brands is still very obvious when compared to multinational companies. Accordingly, Dongfeng Motor Company has carried out extensive thinking and practice on technological innovation. During international cooperation, they established strategic alliances with the PSA, Nissan, Renault and other international auto companies, integrating resource advantages, which gave play to synergistic effects; in domestic cooperation, they carried out cooperation in forward-looking technologies, new energy and intelligent connectivity etc. with FAW, Huawei, China Electronics etc. It is worth mentioning that in the period of the 12th Five-year-plan, Dongfeng Motor Corporation’s total investment in science and technology activities is 66.29 billion RMB, accounting for 7.15% of its sales revenue. Among them, the research and experimental development funds reached 46.132 billion RMB, accounting for 3.5% of the proportion of sales revenue.

Changan Automobile Vice President Yuan Mingxue, puts forward a substantive response strategy on the current development of the automotive industry. He believes, "Internet +" is the biggest driving force to lead the economic development. In automotive industry, auto products and services are the primary elements of competition. Customer experience and user behavior is the key of the "Internet +" automotive industry. Yuan Mingxue points out that there will exist three big uncertainties: first is the technological uncertainty -- intelligent driving, powertrain battery, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, networking and other technologies still have room for development, including the emergence of new technologies in the future. which will subvert the entire automotive industry; Secondly, new consumer groups will bring new needs; third, and the government policies are unpredictable.
