Over the past decade, we have witnessed the rise and growth of new energy vehicles. In recent years, new energy vehicles continue to form a key element of government policy, effectively supporting the surge in NEV demand. In 2017, what is the current situation of new energy vehicles? Where will the future policy direction go? What will characterize the next stage of evolution of the NEV market in China without subsidies?

In the 2017 Global Automotive Forum this afternoon, delegates from China, Japan, Britain and India have discussed these issues together during a the “Green Technologies and New Energy Vehicles: Outlook, Opportunities and Challenges” panel session.


In light of the three trends of new energy vehicles, automakers should focus on the product itself.

Changan Automobile New Energy Automobile Research Institute Vice President and Chongqing Changan New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd. Chief Engineer Su Ling said that the auto industry is under a transition period. He summed up three major trends in the current domestic new energy automotive industry. First, new energy vehicles are expected to improve with government policies, regulations and technical support. Second, new energy vehicles are mainly sold in cities with car restrictions and vehicle purchase limitation and there are more private car owners. Third, multi-technology integration promotes consumption throughout the entire industry as the traditional consumption is changing into experiential consumption.

Su Ling also said the challenges from the auto industry transformation will get bigger, especially for traditional automakers, and keeping the balance between new energy vehicles and traditional cars is necessary. In addition, challenges resulting from infrastructure construction, business model innovation and cost control also make a great difference to current new energy vehicles.

Responding to the current challenges, Su Ling thinks that the first thing the car companies should do is to make better products to create the ultimate product experience; The second action is to reduce costs from the whole industry chain; the third action is to innovate business models to look for profit growth; the forth action is to create an energy ecosystem for the entire value chain and industrial chain layout. According to Su Ling, Changan Automobile is trying to work with parts suppliers, new energy technology research and development enterprises. By cooperating with other companies, they can make the new energy industry bigger and stronger.


Development of hydrogen energy vehicles: the "three steps" strategy to achieve zero emissions.

"The automotive industry should take the initiative to face air pollution, global warming and other environmental issues," said Honda Technology Research Institute Automotive R&D Center, Senior Inspector Mr. 齐藤信広. Honda will view environmental pollution as a key area for the next step in automotive research and development. It will take the "three-steps" strategy to realize the zero emissions target: the first step is to improve the internal combustion engine’s efficiency; the second step is to increase the amount of hybrid vehicles to improve efficiency by electrification; the third step is to further develop hybrid cars and zero-emission vehicles.

At the forum, Mr. Saito Nobuhiro discussed his exploration and work on hydrogen fuel vehicles at Honda: "As an alternative energy, hydrogen power has many advantages in the future." According to Mr. Saito Nobuhiro, Honda has been researching hydrogen fuel cell vehicles since 1998 and independently developed hydrogen production technology in 2009 through integrated electricity and electrolysis. In 2016, Honda installed intelligent hydrogenated stoves in cities such as Tokyo.

"Honda hopes to expand infrastructure to serve the automotive industry. We use hydrogen and can also produce it. Gathering hydrogen is a key technology to service for such a new type of society, and can help finally achieve our renewable social aim," Mr. Saito Nobuhiro concluded.


Build and develop the biosphere; investment ensures the ability to lead

Mike Wright, Chairman of the International Trade Department of the British Automotive Investment Group, at the forum explained: "the establishment of the British Automotive Investment Group is to further promote investment in suppliers and the development of the automotive industry and increased investment. The group has produced 20,000 jobs and more than 300 investment projects, many of which are related to new energy automobile R&D projects."

According Mr. Wright, the British Automobile Industry Association, established in 2009, is operated by automotive industry leaders and the British government. The association engages in exploiting strategic initiatives and further improving the capacity of the UK's automotive industry.

Mr. Wright also talked about the establishment of a new energy vehicle ecosphere. He explained that today, the automotive industry ecosystem of the UK, including OEM R&D centers, universities and approval bodies, together with UK ecological institutions, can help provide the technology for automotive R&D and production, such as electric vehicle and unmanned driving technology.
