2017 is a watershed year for qualitative and quantitative change. In this competitive era of continuous reform, in which direction can global auto industries go? How does the Chinese auto industry optimize its role? How likely can it turn its situation around?

Today, in the opening ceremony of the 8th Global Automotive Forum, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade’s Automotive Committee Chairman Wang Xia, Chongqing First Deputy Mayor Wu Cunrong, Deputy Director of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and China Machinery Industry Federation’s (CMIF) Wang Ruixiang responded to these questions.

“We need to rediscover the depth and breadth of the industry's transformation and recognize the coming age of new cars.” Chairman Wang Xia illustrated the unprecedented transformation undergoing from three aspects: “Car products are no longer a single means of transportation, but are the largest integrated mobile terminal in human society; The car industry's borders have disappeared, becoming more open and broad, and traditional auto companies have turned to technologies and services oriented. The new relationship between the cars and society is being formed, and the environment, safety, law and economy are all facing challenges. Cars have become social and economic products.”

How does China, which has become the "main battleground" in the global car industry, transform from a “subordinate” into a "leader" during this crucial period"?

Wang Xia openly appealed that we should get rid of the fantasy of passing on the corner. Every company will have the opportunity to pass on the corner thus they each lose this advantage and are more likely to make mistakes. Therefore, he believes China should engage in what China itself is an expert in, develop model innovation and core technologies simultaneously and continue to integrate the world’s best resources.

Deputy Mayor Wu Cunrong held similar opinions as Chairman Wang Xia. He noted that disruptive changes are happening in the industry. In this situation, China is leading the world's fastest growing consumer market. According to his introduction, "Chongqing’s automobile industry has enjoyed rapid development. Car production was only 200,000 units 20 years ago. In 2016, whole vehicle production was 3.16 million units in the city with thousands of industrial groups, accounting for 11% of the country’s, and leading other provinces.

As a southwestern town with the most dynamic market, “Chongqing,” according to Wu Cunrong, “will continue to push forward the vertical integration industry chain, forming the integration of upstream and downstream clusters; By 2020, we should aim to have built up international first-class research and development hub for new energy vehicles and intelligent cars, and have achieved a successful transformation toward intelligent manufacturing model and keep expanding market space to uncover consumption potential.”

Participating in the Global Automotive Forum for the 8th time, Wang Ruixiang said: “In order to push forward the transition and improve the automotive industry during the reconstructing process of global competition, the entire industry will continue to follow strategic requirements, build stronger brands, perfect systems, reinforce basic capabilities, achieve breakthroughs in key areas, accelerate cross-sector coordination, improve brand quality, foster deeper cooperation to strengthen businesses, increase self-driven development, propel structural upgrading, and intensify our international development ability.”

What is the attitude of the auto industry toward the international competition in this transition period? Wang Ruixiang cited the opinion of President Xi Jinping during the “the Belt and Road” Summit. President Xi stated: "Peaceful cooperation, open and inclusive mutual learning, mutual benefit, win-win cooperation." He called on China's auto industry to bear responsibility and take action effectively so as to build a new international system to help the auto industry achieve win-win cooperation.
