Chongqing is the only municipality directly under the Central Government in Western China. In December 2008, the first inland bonded port zone of China was set up in Chongqing.
In February 2009, Chongqing was listed in the 5 central cities of China; Chongqing is the only one in mid-western China.
In February 2010, China's biggest comprehensive bonded zone was established in Xiyong Park, Chongqing.
In June 2010, the “3rd New Area” of China-- Chongqing Liangjiang New Area was established.
In July 2014, approved by the State Council, Chongqing established the Complete Vehicle Import Port, the first one in China's western inland area.
■ Famous auto city in China
There are 32 automotive manufacturers in Chongqing with an annual production capacity of 4 million units, including 14 automobile manufacturers and 18 specialty vehicle manufacturers. Chongqing has created the automotive industrial cluster with “1+10+1000”, which means 1 leading group “Changan Group (Changan, Changan Ford and Changan Suzuki)”, 10 whole vehicle companies including Qingling Motors, SAIC-IVECO Hongyan, DFSK, Lifan Motors, Brilliance Shineray, SAIC-GM-Wuling, BAIC Yinxiang, and 1000 OEM parts manufacturers.
In 2014, the gross output of Chongqing automotive industry reached 2.63 million units with a year on year growth of 22.3%, which was 15 percentage points higher than national average. The output accounted for more than 11% in China’s total production and ranked no. 1 nationwide. The GDP of industrial enterprises above designated size in Chongqing reached RMB 384.7 billion, with a year on year growth of 20%.

The administrative area of Chongqing is 82,400 km2 and the population is 33 million. It has a vast local market and powerful radiation ability on the neighboring provinces and cities, covering a peripheral market with a population of over 300 million.
■ Rapidly growing economy
Since Chongqing became a municipality, the annual average growth rate of GDP and investment in fixed assets has always remained above 10% and around 20% respectively, keeping the economic growth over a relatively long period. The total GDP in Chongqing in 2014 reached RMB 1426.54 billion, increased by 10.9%; Investment in fixed assets reached RMB 1322.38 billion, increased by 18.0%; the actual utilization of foreign capital has exceeded USD 10 billion for 4 consecutive years.

Chongqing has established economic and trade relations with over 180 countries and regions. Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Denmark, Hungary, Philippine, Ethiopia, Holland and Cambodia have established consulates in Chongqing; Austria, Belgium and Germany have established agencies of chambers of commerce here. About 200 Fortune 500 enterprises, including Ford, HP, BP, Ericsson, ABB, Lafarge, Carrefour, Metro, Isuzu Motors and Suzuki Motor, have established their presence in Chongqing.
■ Sound industrial base
Chongqing is one of the six old industrial bases in China, with a complete range of industries and strong supporting capacity. Industry is the dominant force in the economy of Chongqing: in 2014, there were nearly 1,000 new industrial enterprises above designated size, and the total added value of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 12.6%, 4.3 percentage points higher than national average.
The “6+1” pillar industries, i.e. automobiles, electronic information, equipment manufacturing, natural gas chemistry, materials and energy, textile and labor-intensive industries, have been developed in Chongqing.

Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges
Wulong Tiansheng Three Bridges Site is a precious eco-system site which is famous for the karst topography especially the Tiankeng or natural sinkhole in the world. Located about 20km away from Wulong County, these three stone arch bridges enjoy the fame as “top natural arch bridges in the world”.
The Three Gorges region is a scenic area along the Yangtze River in China with a total length of approximately 200 km. Although it is primarily famous for its scenery, the Three Gorges region is historically and culturally an important region in China, including Qutang Gorge, Wu Gorge, and Xiling Gorge.
People’s Great Hall of Chongqing
People’s Great Hall of Chongqing is a fine, unique and neat oriental structure. In 1987, History of Comparative Architecture, which is a classical works of world's architecture published by Britain, embodied 43 contemporary structures in China. People’s Great Hall of Chongqing was placed second. It was built in June 1951, and completed in April 1954. It's also the representative building with special characteristics in Chongqing. The whole building is composed of an auditorium and three accompanying storied buildings-east building, south building, and north building. It covers a total area of 66,000 square meters, with the auditorium covering 18,500 square meters. It’s 65 meters high. The auditorium is 55 meters high. The internal diameter of the auditorium is 46.33 meters. The circle auditorium is surrounded by five-storeyed stand which are protruded out. It has a seating capacity of 3400. It is a traditional symmetric building, matching with colonnades and double wings. The whole building is completed in the form of temple. It's in perfect proportion. The Hall looks like an enlarged Temple of Heaven in Beijing, with big green glazed roof tiles, red colonnades, white balustrades. Building this hall is to pray that the country flourishes and people live in peace forever.
Three Gorges Museum
The China Three Gorges Museum was opened in 2005. It is a newly built museum with a construction area of about 40,000 square meters. It is near People’s Square and the Great Hall of the People. It is also called the Chongqing Museum. There are displays of Chinese art and of artifacts saved from the construction of the 3 Gorges Dam and the artificial lake. It instructs on the 3 Gorges region, the 3 Gorges Dam, the history of Chongqing and the surrounding area, Chinese history, and prehistoric times.
Hong Ya Dong (Hong Ya Cave)
This complex overlooks the Jialing River and has a brightly lit waterfall and paved streets built right into the mountainside. The main attraction is the Ba Yu Theater, a rather cheesy performance of Chongqing customs and folklore. The historical aspects of Ba Yu culture have been dumbed down, but the costumes, choreography, and the bit on the Devil Town of Fengdu make it an evening well spent.
Dazu Rock Carvings
Listed as a World Heritage Site, the Dazu Rock Carvings are made up of 75 protected sites containing some 50,000 statues, with over 100,000 Chinese characters forming inscriptions and epigraphs. The sites are located in Chongqing Municipality within the steep hillsides throughout Dazu County, located about 60 kilometers west of the urban area of Chongqing. The highlights of the rock grotto are found on Mount Baoding and Mount Beishan.
The earliest carvings were begun in 650 AD during the early Tang dynasty, but the main period of their creation began in the late 9th century, when Wei Junjing, Prefect of Changzhou, pioneered the carvings on Mount Beishan, and his example was followed after the collapse of the Tang dynasty by local and gentry, monks and nuns, and ordinary people during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period (907-65). In the 12th century, during the Song dynasty, a Buddhist monk named Zhao Zhifeng began work on the elaborate sculptures and carvings on Mount Baoding, dedicating 70 years of his life to the project.
Ciqikou Ancient Town
Located on a hill above the Jialing River in the western part of Chongqing city, Ciqikou Ancient Town consist of two city streets and back allies that are set aside as a pedestrian shopping and dining area where people go to shop and eat snacks and gourmet food. Originally, Ciqikou Ancient Town was a river port and market town in the Ming Dynasty. Goods were transported over land and water from here. Nowadays, it becomes a part of Chongqing with some buildings renovated and preserved.
Solitary Tree Viewing Plat
Nanshan Solitary Tree Viewing Plat lies in the southern bank of Yangtze River in Chongqing City. It is a tree that connects the Laojun Cave on the left and Fortress Hill on the right. Divided by the river from the urban center, it is over 500 meters above sea level, covering an area of 120 acres. It consists of viewing plat, attic, pavilion and leisure areas in the opening. The plat has many functions, such as viewing, relaxing, tea-drinking, photography taking, entertaining and so on. Originally it was only a tree viewing plat opened in January 1997. As it reserves a tree called Ficus virens (a very common tree seen mostly in Chongqing, Sichuan and Hubei Province) for so many years, it got the name.
The Yangtze Ropeway in Chongqing
Yangtze Ropeway, the second ropeway over river, came into use in October, 1987. This ropeway starts from Xinhua Road, Yuzhong District, end at Shangxin Street, Nan’an District. It is 1116 meters long and carries 10500 passengers every day. The Yangtze River ropeway enjoys “the first corridor in the air over the Yangtze river”.
