As the one and only municipality directly under the Central Government in mid-west China, a comprehensive transportation hub in southwest China, and a significant national modern manufacturing base, Chongqing is a strategic stronghold of the China Western Development. It is located at the junction point of the “Belt and Road Initiative” and the Yangtze River Economic Zone, and it plays a special and important role in the national pattern of regional development and opening-up to the outside world.

In recent years, Chongqing has maintained a good momentum of development, and its gross regional production in 2017 reached RMB 1.95 trillion, which increased 9.3% and that growth rate ranked among the best in the country.

After years of exploration and innovation, Chongqing has formed a “3 three-in-one” inland opening-up type economy feature consisting of 3 transportation hubs of air, waterway and railway, 3 national open ports, and 3 bonded areas. The river-ocean combined transportation between Chongqing and Shanghai, ocean-rail combined transportation between Chongqing and Shenzhen, air freight, as well as the Chongqing-Sinkiang-Europe International Railway Channel and the Chongqing-ASEN Road Transportation Channel had been opened; on account of multimodel transport of rail, waterway, road and air, Chongqing becomes the most economical and convenient comprehensive logistics hinge.

The operation center of the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity, the National Cross-border Electronic Commerce Comprehensive Pilot Area, the Innovative Development Pilot Project of National Trade in Service, China (Chongqing) Pilot Free Trade Zone, Big Data Comprehensive Test Region, and some other new projects and new policies settled in Chongqing in succession. Chongqing will inevitably have new and greater opportunities for development.


■ Famous auto city in China

As the largest automotive manufacturing base, Chongqing has an annual vehicle production capacity of 4.5 million units with 38 automotive manufacturers, including 20 whole vehicle manufacturers and 18 specialty vehicle manufacturers. There are about 840 automotive parts and accessories enterprises above designated size in Chongqing and more than 72% of suppliers are within Chongqing.

In 2017, Chongqing's auto industry above designated size achieved an output value of over RMB 500 billion, and 3 million automobiles were produced. The growth rate of the automobile manufacturing industry was 6.2%.


■ Broad market

The administrative area of Chongqing is 82,400 km2 and the population is 33.90 million. It has a vast local market and powerful radiation ability on the neighboring provinces and cities, covering a peripheral market with a population of over 300 million.


■ Rapidly growing economy

The total GDP in Chongqing in 2017 reached RMB 1950.027 billion, and increased by 9.3%. Investment in fixed assets reached RMB 1744.057 billion, and increased by 9.5%.


■ Foreign capital: coming in a continuous stream

Chongqing has established economic and trade relations with over 180 countries and regions.

Above 10 countries including Great Britain, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Cambodia, Philippine, Hungary, Ethiopia, Holland and Italy have established consulates in Chongqing. More than 270 Fortune 500 enterprises, including Ford, HP, BP, Ericsson, ABB, Lafarge, Carrefour, Metro, Isuzu Motors and Suzuki Motor, have established their presence in Chongqing.


■ Sound industrial base

Chongqing is one of the six old industrial bases in China, with a complete range of industries and strong supporting capacity. Industry is the dominant force in the economy of Chongqing. In 2017, added value of industries reached RMB 658.708 billion with a year on year growth of 9.4%, and accounted for 33.8% of the whole city’s GDP. The pillar industries, i.e. automobiles, electronic information, equipment manufacturing, natural gas chemistry, materials and energy industries, have maintained a good momentum of development in Chongqing.
